SEPTIC TANK INSTALLATION MATERIALS

Septic tank installation is my expertise, I would like to share my knowledge with you.  I have spent my entire life giving my very best to all of my customers and their projects.

This particular septic tank installation information is for an ejector system but I will tell you how to install a septic tank. I will also talk about infiltrator systems which are very popular.  Where I live, we are allowed to install ejectors.

An ejector system doesn't require a septic field. The effluent pump is inside the septic tank which pumps the liquid to the ejector.  Septic tanks have two compartments, one side holds the solids and the small compartment holds the liquid.  When the solids side reaches the top of the baffle the liquid flows over into the small compartment where the effluent pump is.

The effluent pump is turned on by a pill switch that is factory set. When the liquid reaches a certain height, the pill floats upside down and turns the pump on.  The ejector would be installed between 150 and 200 feet away from the house.

When I do a septic tank installation, I try to install the ejector in the bush or someplace where it will be protected from the wind in cold weather. The liquid is pumped out onto the ground then soaks in so it's always nice to have trees close to suck up the moisture.

This is a picture of all the materials I have used in my septic tank installation jobs.  Some of these fittings won't be used for every installation but in my business I never know what I will need so I keep as much as I can in stock.  All of these materials can be bought at the local hardware store.

Septic Tank Install Kit

This is ABS Pipe and it is very strong and is 4 inches in diameter. This would be the pipe that comes out under the footing of a home that goes directly to the septic tank or town system. Sometimes it will come through the wall.  If you're building a new home place a 4 foot piece under the footing before it's poured.  ABS glue is used for gluing ABS fittings, and it is yellow and very strong to breathe in.

ABS Sewer Pipe

This is the sewer ejector.  This will be installed 150-200 feet from the home and maybe further depending on the situation. A poly pipe is connected to the septic tank and goes all the way to the ejector.  The ejector is 10 feet long and the trench must be 8 feet deep allowing 2 feet of the ejector to be above the ground to work properly.  If the ejector can't be installed amongst the trees then build a box over it and attach a piece of pipe and let it come out the side of the box.  This will keep the wind off of it in the winter months.

Septic System Ejector

This blue cover is about a 3 dollar item but very important to have on hand during a septic tank installation. The 4 inch cover has two purposes. Install the cover on the ABS pipe that comes out under the footing, it will keep the dirt out of the pipe until the septic tank installer can attach the sewer pipe to it.  The other purpose is to cover the 4 inch  inlet pipe going into the septic tank while it's being backfilled.

These fittings are called fernco's and a very soft flexible rubber but strong and durable.  One is a 3 inch to 4 inch!  Sometimes plumbers in the past have installed 3 inch ABS pipe to go to the sewer tank and this is a good fitting to do a transition up to four inch if installing a new septic tank.  The other fitting is straight 4 inch and good for connecting two pipes together if one is slightly bigger than the other or different material.

Fernco fittings

This is called a transition fitting. This fitting is what connects ABS pipe to PVC pipe.  ABS is black and PVC is white.  Both are four inch but the ABS pipe is much thicker and stronger.  The transition fitting is glued into an ABS coupling then the PVC pipe fits into the transition fitting.  When connecting ABS to ABS, use ABS glue, when connecting PVC to ABS, use transition glue. Transition glue is a gray color.

This is an effluent pump not a sump pump.  An effluent pump is used in a septic tank to pump a high volume of liquid for several minutes at a time. This is a 1/2 hp Liberty pump. This is all you will ever need in a septic tank. I've had great luck with Liberty, nothing lasts forever but these pumps are trouble free for years. Another good pump is a red devil. You can go down to a 1/3 or 1/4 hp but they would work harder and may not last as long

Effluent Pump

This is a sump pump not an effluent pump. Notice how much smaller the sump pump is compared to an effluent pump.  A sump pump is used in the basement to discharge ground water that comes into the sump pit through draintile that surrounds a foundation. Yes, in some places the ground water is piped into the basement to be pumped out. A sump pit would be at least 18 inches deep and keeps the water table down.  You can discharge ground water into the septic tank by connecting the sump pump pipe to the sewer pipe somewhere above the floor and install a trap in the line. Never connect a floor drain to a sewer line! NEVER!  If the sewer ever backed up it would come into the basement through the floor drain.

Sump Pump

This is a 750-gallon fiberglass septic tank. A home with up to 3 bedrooms can use a 750-gallon tank.  A home with 4 bedrooms and up is required to use a 1000-gallon tank.  Don't spend the extra money if you don't have to. I used a 750-gallon tank at my own home and waited 5 years to pump it.  I recommend pumping your tank every 2-3 years but alot of people pump their tank every year. The best time to pump the septic tank is through the summer, don't wait until late fall.  The septic tank has a lot of heat in it from bacteria, keep the heat in the tank going into winter.
