  •  What size does a Fiberglass pump out septic tank have to be?

According to public health, homes up to 3 bedrooms require a minimum of 750-gallon capacity. A 4-bedroom home requires 1000-gallon capacity.  If you need a holding tank, then it has to be a minimum of 1000 gallons.  A holding tank is needed if you have less than 10 acres or if you have a cottage at the lake. A lot of people will install a holding tank at a new shop and have it pumped every few months.  On many occasions my customers will ask for a 2000 gal holding tank.

  •  Can I install a septic tank by myself?

You most certainly can if you have a 12-15 ton excavator that will dig 10-12 feet deep or have a neighbor/friend with one.   I can provide the septic tank and all the materials you need to do the job.   I’m always available by phone to help.

  • How far should the septic tank be from the house?

There is nothing set in stone but 15 to 20 feet is normal!  Closer is better and cheaper. I have installed them 30 feet away before and they work just fine.  You wouldn’t install a septic tank in front of your deck unless you absolutely had to but if you do it might have to be 30 feet away.

  • What is better a concrete septic tank or a fiberglass septic tank?

A fiberglass septic tank will last forever!  They are about the same price.   Concrete tanks are extremely heavy and can only be handled by the manufacturer boom truck but anyone can lift a fiberglass septic tank. If you buy a fiberglass septic tank…you can haul it home with a 6 X 12 trailer and install it yourself. A 750 gallon fiberglass tank weighs about 500 pounds where a concrete tank weighs about 12,000 pounds. I’ve installed one concrete tank in 10 years

  •  What is the difference between a septic tank and a holding tank?

A septic tank has two compartments, one for solids and the other for liquid. When the solid side is full the liquid flows over into the small compartment of the tank where the pump is. The pump has a float and when it is turned upside down the pump starts and pushes the liquid to a field or an ejector.

A holding tank is just that, the solids and the liquids are mixed together and contained in the tank. When the septic holding tank is full a pumper truck will come and pump it out and haul it away.  It is legal to dump your own sewage on your farmland.

  •  How often should a septic tank be pumped out?

That is a controversial question.  Companies who pump tanks do it every year.  Some people say every 5 years.  I personally waited 7 years!  I say pump it when you want to but do it early summer if it gives you piece of mind.  If you pump a tank in the fall, you are removing all the bacteria which create heat.  I personally prefer to leave the heat in the tank going into winter.

  •   How much does a pump out ejector septic system cost?

This is a hard question to answer because there are so many different options and variables.  An average pump out system with an ejector will cost on average $9000.  This price would include the tank, extension, pump, all fittings and about 200 ft of poly pipe. This also includes the ejector and all the trenching.  A septic field can cost upward $15,000.

  •   How long will a septic tank or system last?

A fiberglass septic tank should last forever if installed properly.  A sewer pump should last 10 years but depends on the brand.  I use nothing but Liberty pumps and in 10 years I have only changed 2 under warranty.  However, the pill has caused me some grief, but they are easy to change. Just because things are new doesn’t mean they won’t fail.
